Don’t blast the emu-wrens to extinction.
The Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex being proposed on protected vegetation had the potential to drive nationally and state threatened birds toward extinction. Destruction of habitat as well as ongoing disturbance from rocket blasts and increased fire risks from rocket launches would have put unique species and local communities at risk. Habitat at the proposed site is critical to the survival of the endangered Eyre Peninsula Southern Emu-wren and the Mallee Whipbird. There are estimated to be as few as 750 Eyre Peninsula Southern Emu-wrens remaining. National conservation advice (2023) explicitly states that to maintain and recover their population “habitat critical to the survival of the subspecies must not be destroyed or degraded”. 80% of the remaining Mallee Whipbird population inhabits the southern Eyre Peninsula. The region is critical to their survival. I am pleased to see that the Native Vegetation Council has rejected the application for the destruction of intact remnant vegetation for the space base at Whalers Way. The NVC’s decision has protected the state's irreplaceable biodiversity and reinforced the integrity of permanent conservation agreements across South Australia. Conservation groups, bird enthusiasts and many South Australians including residents and community groups applaud ongoing protection of vegetation at Whalers Way. Protecting threatened species means protecting the habitat they depend on. I welcome the Native Vegetation Council's recommendation and urge your Government to publicly support this advice. By upholding the permanent protections already in place at Whalers Way, your Government can safeguard irreplaceable habitat and demonstrate its commitment to protecting South Australia's unique natural heritage.
