Protect the heart of Australia

The Lake Eyre Basin comprises hundreds of wetlands that support thousands of waterbirds. Waterbird populations across the country are replenishing by mass-breeding in the Basin, during times of boom.

Thankfully, the Lake Eyre Basin has remained in relatively near-pristine condition until now, but man-made threats are growing, for example from fracking and gas wells being approved across the region, with many more being proposed.

I’m calling on the Commonwealth, State, and Territory governments to step-up their protection of the Lake Eyre Basin. We cannot risk the future of this incredibly unique and extraordinary area, right in the heart of Australia, which plays such a critical role in the lifecycles of Australian birds.
