Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Draft National Recovery Plans for the Gang-gang Cockatoo and South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo.

I support strong, science-based Recovery Plans that give these iconic birds the best chance of recovery.

Cockatoos mate for life and raise few young. As a result, populations can take many decades to recover from habitat clearing and other threats. The mature trees they depend on for nesting and feeding are often hundreds of years old and cannot be replaced once removed.

I strongly encourage the government to strengthen these Recovery Plans by:

1. Including strong, unambiguous language that habitat critical to survival is protected and must not be destroyed, degraded or fragmented.

2. Protecting mature hollow-bearing trees and other irreplaceable nesting habitat.

3. Preventing further clearing of critical feeding and breeding habitat.

4. Providing cost estimates to implement all recovery actions and a clear commitment by the Australian Government to fully fund them.

5. Providing clear accountability, annual public reporting and regular review of progress and adaptive management

6. Supporting Recovery Teams to coordinate conservation efforts.

7. Expanding incentives for private landholders to protect and restore habitat.

8. Ensuring climate change impacts are addressed through species recovery planning.

9. Supporting collaboration and participation of First Nations peoples, local communities, landholders and conservation organisations.

Recovery Plans should not simply identify the actions needed to recover threatened species; they must provide a clear, funded and accountable roadmap for achieving recovery. While species recovery is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration across multiple partners, success depends on those partners having the resources to act.

I urge decision makers to significantly increase investment in species recovery by fully funding every action identified in Recovery Plans and supporting the coordination required to turn plans into measurable conservation outcomes.

Australia cannot replace centuries-old habitat once it is gone. Protecting what remains while restoring habitat for future generations is essential to ensuring these remarkable birds survive and recover.

The federal government must adopt strong Recovery Plans that are backed by meaningful habitat protection, adequate funding and measurable commitments to implementation.

Thank you for considering my submission.
