Open Letter to Minister Murray Watt

Dear Minister,

We the undersigned are Australian bird and nature lovers who are deeply concerned about the unintended impacts that Second-generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) are having on our wildlife and communities.

We urge you to use your Ministerial powers to accelerate the federal review of SGARs by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). The APVMA has indicated that their final report and recommendations will not be released until 2025. Minister, these recommendations will come too late for many of the native birds that we love.

As long as SGARs can be purchased by the general public they are going to be used widely, and will continue to accumulate in the natural food chain, putting native wildlife and domestic animals at risk of fatal poisoning.

Other jurisdictions including the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States have all regulated the use and sale of SGARs due to the impacts on non-target wildlife and the broader environment – impacts mirrored in Australian scientific studies.

Minister, please issue a ministerial direction to the APVMA to finalise the review of SGARs, so that Australia can take steps to regulate SGARs and protect the birds that we love.
