Will you defend critical habitat for threatened migratory shorebirds?
Dear Politicians - Murray Watt (Minister for Environment), Jim Chalmers (Treasurer), Madeleine King (Minister for Resources) CC: Marion Scrymgour MP, Luke Gosling MP, Malarndirri McCarthy MP. I am writing to you as someone who cares about the remarkable birds of Darwin Harbour. I want to know if you will stop funding the destruction of threatened species’ habitat. I stand with BirdLife Australia and BirdLife Top End in the call to protect threatened migratory shorebirds in Darwin Harbour, and ask that you redirect the $1.5 billion allocated for the Middle Arm development. The Middle Arm development poses an unacceptable risk to the Northern Territory’s birds, the habitats they rely on, and the broader ecological balance of the region. To protect the threatened shorebirds in Darwin Harbour, we ask you to commit to; 1. Defending critical habitat for threatened migratory shorebirds in Darwin Harbour. This means committing to improving the legal site protection and management of significant shorebird sites. 2. Redirecting the Government subsidy of $1.5 billion dollars for the Middle Arm Industrial Precinct. This means appropriately managing threatened species and the environment for nature positive outcomes, as well as mitigating the threats from coastal development and ensuring that regulatory frameworks are in place and followed. 3. Recognising the value and importance of the Top End as a hub for avitourism. This means quantifying the financial value of birdwatching to the tourism sector in the Northern Territory, and ensuring that nature is protected in a way that avitourism as a sustainable and growing industry. People like me from all over Australia love our precious coastal environments and the birds that also call Darwin Harbour home. I want to ensure that future generations can experience the joy of seeing thousands of birds flying across our coastline. Will you commit to ensuring Australians and our Top End birds are protected into the future?
