Protect Swift Parrots Forever

Swift Parrots are incredible birds who migrate every year from their nesting trees in Tasmania across the Bass Strait chasing flowering gum trees to feed on.

But there are fewer than 1000 breeding pairs left to raise future generations.

We want a future where Swift Parrots are a common sight in Tasmania, Melbourne backyards and the forests of the New South Wales Coast.

But incredibly, we could see critical nesting habitat opened up for logging if the Tasmanian Parliament agrees.

Meanwhile, logging of native forests known to be used by the species on the south coast of NSW is happening in areas that were spared from fires.

In the wake of these devastating fires, political leaders must deliver stronger nature laws to protect what is left.

Minister, give Swift Parrots a fighting chance

Dear Minister Watt,

We the undersigned are Australian bird lovers who are deeply concerned about the future of one of Australia’s most endangered birds, the Swift Parrot

Time is running out for this emblematic migratory parrot which connects our forests and communities from Tasmania to Queensland. The latest science shows how dire the situation is for these amazing Australian birds. If we continue with business as usual, in 10 years it is expected there will be fewer than 100 Swift Parrots left in the world.

We know what is causing their decline, habitat destruction, and luckily, we have the tool to fix it - a strong National Recovery Plan that prevents the clearing of the forests where Swift Parrots live, feed, breed and raise their young.

Minister, we don’t have to watch the extinction of Swift Parrots in real time. You still have time to turn the tide for native birds and use your power to improve National Recover Plans into the future.

We urge you to work with your Department to strengthen the Swift Parrot National Recovery Plan to ensure they have a fighting chance.
