Minister, give Swift Parrots a fighting chance

Dear Minister Plibersek,

We the undersigned are Australian bird lovers who are deeply concerned about the future of one of Australia’s most endangered birds, the Swift Parrot

Time is running out for this emblematic migratory parrot which connects our forests and communities from Tasmania to Queensland. The latest science shows how dire the situation is for these amazing Australian birds. If we continue with business as usual, in 10 years it is expected there will be fewer than 100 Swift Parrots left in the world.

Luckily, we know what is causing their decline, habitat destruction, and we have the tool to fix it, a strong National Recovery Plan that prevents the clearing of the forests where Swift Parrots live, feed, breed and raise their young.

However, we fear that the new National Recovery Plan, which you announced last month, is not strong enough to protect these forests that are critical to not only the recovery of Swift Parrots but their survival.

Minister, we don’t have to watch the extinction of Swift Parrots in real time. You still have time to turn the tide for Swift Parrots and use your power to improve the National Recover Plan.

We urge you to work with your Department to strengthen the National Recovery Plan so that it will actually give the Swift Parrots that we love a fighting chance to survive and thrive.
