But incredibly, we could see critical nesting habitat opened up for logging if the Tasmanian Parliament agrees.

Meanwhile, logging of native forests known to be used by the species on the south coast of NSW is happening ...

In the wake of these devastating fires, political leaders must deliver stronger nature laws to protect what is left.

As one of your local constituents, I am writing to urge you to take action to protect threatened birds, such as the critically endangered Swift Parrot, from unsustainable native forestry operations.

Swift Parrots have been on a perilous decline over the past few decades, with recent studies suggesting their effective wild population is 750, but it could be as few as 300 individual birds.

Swift Parrots are one of only three migratory parrot species on Earth. Each winter, they migrate to forage exclusively on the mainland, chasing flowering gum trees to sustain their winter foraging needs, before returning to Tasmania to breed each summer. In New South Wales, the Spotted Gum forests of the south coast are nationally and internationally recognised for their importance to Swift Parrot conservation.

The destruction of native forests through logging, both along the south-eastern mainland and in Tasmania, is one of the primary threats to the future survival of Swift Parrots.

In May the Victorian Government announced that they would end native forestry operations by the end of 2023, six years earlier than planned. While the announcement will grant a badly needed reprieve for nature still recovering from the 2019/20 black summer bushfires, birds like the Swift Parrot do not recognise state jurisdiction or borders.  If the native forests Swift Parrots need continue to be logged we could witness their extinction within a matter of years.

You can make a real difference for this iconic Australian bird by calling on the New South Wales Government to announce a rapid end date for native forestry operations and to develop a transition plan for the industry, including proper funding.  The NSW Environment Department, under the previous government, prepared costings and a plan to end native forestry, a plan which had broad support.

Please take action now, and save the Swift Parrots I love, by protecting our precious NSW native forests!
