Saved Toondah Harbour Open Letter

To the Albanese Government,

Our national nature laws are so broken that it took people like me to step up to save nature at Toondah Harbour.  Now we ask our elected representatives to take action and pass the laws that will save all the places we love across Australia.

I am proud to have helped save Toondah Harbour from Walker Corporation’s proposal to destroy mudflats and mangroves within Ramsar-listed Moreton Bay wetlands, home to animals like Critically Endangered Eastern Curlews. But it took the community and scientists a decade to stop this inappropriate project, highlighting that Australia’s current nature laws aren’t working.

We need strong environmental standards that set the rules all developers and businesses must follow, so that nature is genuinely protected. The recently announced Environmental Protection Australia and Environment Information Australia are important parts of the puzzle, but without strong standards for nature, the new EPA and EIA wouldn’t have stopped Walker Corporation’s proposal, and they won’t stop the destruction of birds and the places we love.

I call on the Albanese Government and our Parliament to pass strong standards for nature as a priority, to save the Australia we love.
